REP. DAVIDS BILL ESTABLISHING VETERANS HOME IN FILLMORE COUNTY MOVING FORWARD

Friday, February 17, 2017

ST. PAUL – State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) said his legislation establishing a new veterans home in Fillmore County is making solid progress in the Minnesota House. His bill was recently heard and approved in the Minnesota House Veterans Affairs Division.

“If you look at a state map, there are veterans’ homes in all regions of the state and the Metro Area, but nothing in southeastern Minnesota,” Davids said. “The feasibility studies have also been conducted and the need for a facility is there.”

Davids said he was joined by Fillmore County Commissioners as well as city leaders from both Preston and Spring Valley at the hearing. Davids said both cities have brought forward very good proposals and he is pleased that they are interested in becoming home to this necessary project.

Davids’ bill calls for a facility of 100 beds for eligible veterans and their spouses. The proposal would appropriate $10 million in state bonding proceeds to be used with other matching funds between local, federal and private sources.

Davids’ southeastern Minnesota veterans’ home legislation now heads to the Minnesota State Government Finance Committee for further debate.
