RELEASE: GOP Education Leads call for Quality Education for all Minnesota Students

Thursday, September 3, 2020

ST. PAUL - House GOP Education Leads Rep. Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, and Rep. Sondra Erickson, R-Princeton, called for accountability measures as students and teachers gear up for a new school year next week.

"It is incredibly important that schools ensure that each student receives a quality education this year, regardless of their learning model," said Kresha. "Whether learning takes place in person or online, education will look different for every student and teacher this year. We need to make sure students are not falling through the cracks, and address the obstacles they will face in the upcoming school year."

Measures suggested include stronger accountability on actual instructional hours, establishing stronger guidance for daily interactions between teachers and students, and ensuring parents are involved in any changes to Individualized Education Programs.

"Our students deserve the best education we can give them, and our teachers deserve clear expectations as they return to teaching, whether in a classroom or online," said Erickson. "These measures will give everyone peace of mind as we move forward this school year. I hope we can all come together to provide the best learning environment for our students this year, regardless of whether they are learning in person or using a different model."
