RELEASE: GOP Education Leads to introduce legislation on school reopening

Friday, July 10, 2020

ST. PAUL – Representatives Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, and Sondra Erickson, R-Princeton, will introduce legislation during next week’s special session ensuring local control in school reopening plans and empowering school boards to decide whether to implement an in-person, hybrid, or distance learning model when students go back to school in the fall.

“Our school officials are the ones who know their districts, families, and students best, and they should be the ones steering the ship going into the upcoming school year,” said Kresha. “We have seen that a one-size-fits-all mandate doesn’t work. It’s time to trust our local officials to do the job they were chosen to do.”

“Local school officials have led their districts exceptionally well through the upheaval of school closures, and we need to empower them to navigate the challenges that come next using the insights and expertise they have gained through all this,” said Erickson. “The current top-down approach is failing everyone, our students most of all. We need a change, and we need it now.”

The upcoming special session begins Monday, although no start time has been announced by Speaker Hortman.
