RELEASE: GOP Education Leads Call For Local Control in School Reopening

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

ST. PAUL - In response to the recent joint House Education Finance and Policy committee meetings regarding reopening schools, Representative Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, and Representative Sondra Erickson, R-Princeton, called on Governor Walz today to grant local school districts control over school reopenings this fall.

"Our local school officials know their districts, their students, and their communities, and they should be the ones driving this decision," said Kresha. "A top-down approach has no place in this conversation. There is no question that schools will be open in the Fall. The challenge is how they will open, and I believe the best decision in this time of uncertainty is to let each school create their own plan. MDE should approve the plans and work with schools that request assistance.”

“Students, families, and school districts are ready to get back to school this fall,” said Rep. Erickson. “House Republicans are ready to work with Governor Walz and his administration to give districts the flexibility they need to make decisions about the upcoming school year that make the most sense for their communities.”

Governor Walz previously said that there would not be an announcement on school reopening until late July.
