Legislative Update and Town Hall Schedule for March 14th

Friday, March 13, 2015

Mille Lacs County Commissioner David Oslin and Lands Service Director Michele McPherson joined me to testify in support of a bill that would grant more local control to Mille Lacs County in regards to building codes and regulations

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you to those of you who took time to visit the Capitol this week. It was great to meet and discuss the issues that matter most to you, our communities, and our state. Together we can continue our work to ensure that Minnesota continues to be a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

If you have not had a chance to visit St. Paul this session, I strongly encourage you to do so. It is important for me to learn about your thoughts and concerns.

Bill Receives Hearing

House File 1026, a bill that I am chief authoring, received a hearing in the Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee this past Tuesday. HF 1026 authorizes local control or an “opt out” for Mille Lacs County in regards to enforcement of the state building code.

In 2003, Mille Lacs County adopted the state’s building code regulations. Since then, the county has faced a myriad of problems related to these regulations and their enforcement. In an effort to give more local control to the county and as a cost saving measure, HF 1026 would allow Mille Lacs County to establish its own building codes. Presently 47 counties have the ability to opt out of the state building code regulations.

I was honored to be joined by local testifiers, Mille Lacs County Commissioner David Oslin and Lands Service Director Michele McPherson, who spoke in support of the bill.

The bill passed out of committee and has been sent to the Job Growth and Energy Affordability Committee.
