Statement from Rep. Hornstein on House Republican Transportation Plan

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

ST. PAUL, MN – Today, the Minnesota House Republicans released their transportation funding plan. Representative Frank Hornstein, (Minneapolis), the DFL-Lead for the Transportation Finance Committee, released the following statement:

“The House Republican transportation plan is a short-term and divisive gimmick, burning a hole in the general fund budget.  The Republicans’ vision lacks sustainable, dedicated funding for roads and transit and is not a realistic long-term solution for our statewide transportation infrastructure.  The $450 million shift from our general fund slashes funding for Minnesota’s vital needs including education and health care.

The numbers simply don’t add up.  The GOP can’t have corporate tax breaks and fund transportation at the same time.  Their plan divides Minnesotans and cuts funding for buses and para-transit for seniors and people with disabilities.

Furthermore, economic uncertainties loom ahead. At some point, a future legislature will face an economic downturn and loss of revenues, and this money will once again be pulled from transportation as it has been in the past.  I look forward to working with my House GOP colleagues to develop a real plan.  There is a better way to get the job done.”
