Republican House Halts Advancement of ‘Hands Free’ Cell Phone Bill

Wednesday, May 16, 2018

ST. PAUL, MN – Today, House Republicans killed any possibility of advancing the ‘hands free’ cell phone bill in the final days of the 2018 session. Representative Frank Hornstein (DFL-Minneapolis) motioned to suspend the rules on the House Floor to immediately take up HF 1180  which has more than 35 co-sponsors from the GOP and DFL. Republicans blocked the motion on a 74-53 vote. Representative Hornstein, a strong advocate for ‘hands free’ legislation over the past several years, released the following statement:

“There is no excuse for allowing this bipartisan bill to slip through the cracks,” said Rep. Hornstein.

“Distracted driving fatalities are continually on the rise and we have the opportunity to pass significant safety measures to combat these tragedies. Eighty percent of Minnesotans support this common sense bill. Over a fourth of the Minnesota House of Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors. Minnesotans deserve action taken to make our roads safer and reduce preventable injuries and deaths. House Republican leadership’s failure to act is shameful.”
