REP. HAMILTON SEEKS TO ASSIST SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS

Thursday, March 22, 2018

ST. PAUL – State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) said he hears from many victims of sexual assault who are advocating for change, and is supporting legislation he hopes will help curb these violent actions.

“Recently I met with victims from the Southwest Crisis Center in Worthington who were in St. Paul to discuss proposals that were important to them,” Hamilton said. “These are such brave people who step forward to share their stories.”

Over the years, Hamilton said he’s met with adult and child survivors of sexual assault in Worthington, gathering their input and hoping to find ways to help.

In response, Hamilton is co-authoring legislation this session that would create a new statewide account that funds programs for sexual assault prevention and education.

“The resilience shown by the survivors is truly amazing,” Hamilton said. “They battle through the hurt to explain their personal trauma, hoping that by lending their voice others won’t face a similar situation. Clearly sexual assault is a statewide if not national problem, and as lawmakers, we should be doing more to address this very serious topic.”
