Legislative Update – April 18, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

Yesterday, we passed the 2023 Environment, Natural Resources, Climate, and Energy Budget on a vote of 69-59, which invests over $670 in new funding for our environment—the largest in state history. This bill will pay past debts and right past wrongs while also laying a foundation for the future in protecting our environment for all Minnesotans. You can read my statement on the bill here.

This bill addresses issues we have been working on at the legislature since I became chair in 2019. It takes comprehensive action to address Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS), and PFAS “forever chemicals.” It protects wildlife and pollinators, increases transparency, and works to empower those most disproportionately impacted by pollution. I spoke on the House floor about how this bill addresses threats and will protect our air, soil, water, and wildlife now and into the future. You can watch my closing comments here.

Also, I wanted to share that this Saturday’s Annual South St. Paul River Clean-up has been postponed due to rising water levels. Updates will be posted on the City of South St. Paul Facebook.

Inver Grove Heights Water Project

Last Friday, I presented H.F. 3225, my bill providing funding to the city of Inver Grove Heights to repair the water treatment plant. This bill is critical in ensuring our community has clean water. Thank you to the city staff who joined me in presenting this bill in front of the Capital Investment Committee.

Turkey Hunting Season Opener

This weekend, I joined Governor Walz, Senator Foung Hawj, DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen, Ken Cyang, and members of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Northfield for the Turkey Season Kick-Off! It was a great opportunity to discuss the importance of conservation in ensuring that future generations of Minnesotans can hunt and enjoy our great outdoors.
