Statement from Rep. Winkler on the Supreme Court McCutcheon Decision

Wednesday, April 2, 2014

St Paul, MN – Today, the Supreme Court struck down aggregate limits on campaign contributions given by individual donors on a 5-4 ruling. The decision paves the way for donors to pour millions into the campaigns of candidates, political parties, and political action committees. Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) released the following statement.

“The Supreme Court, through its decision today, continues to give economic elites more power in our democracy. This decision ensures that the ever widening gap between rich insiders and everyone else is engrained in our political process.

“Today’s decision in the McCutcheon case will not affect Minnesota’s campaign finance laws directly. But the decision does emphasize the need to close remaining disclosure loopholes in Minnesota’s campaign finance laws.

“House file 1944 would address those loopholes by requiring corporations to disclose who is paying for campaign ads and literature in the weeks before an election.”
