Statement from Rep. Winkler on House GOP Committees

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

St. Paul, Minnesota – Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) released the following statement on the committee structure released today by House Republican leaders:

"The new Republican majority in the Minnesota House has an opportunity to put aside the nasty rhetoric of the election season and begin cooperating with leaders from all over Minnesota to build a stronger state economy for all families. Today's committee announcement is not a good sign of what's to come.

“The new House committees specifically exclude metro area jobs and workforce development from committee assignments and less than one-third of the 26 committee chairs from the metro area. Republicans also leave early childhood education — the best economic development investment we can make anywhere in Minnesota — off the list.

“State government functions best when all corners of the state are fairly represented, but Speaker-designate Daudt seems intent on dividing Greater Minnesota from the Metro area in order to score political points. That's not how Minnesota has been successful in the past and that's not how we build a stronger state for the future. Balanced investment in schools, community infrastructure projects, broadband, worker training and conservation throughout Minnesota is the best path to follow, not the divide-and-conquer mentality that we see today."
