Statement from Rep. Winkler on Record Hotel and Restaurant Hiring

Thursday, December 18, 2014

St. Paul, Minnesota – The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development announced today that the state gained 6,600 jobs in November, with restaurants and hotels adding 5,000 jobs (seasonally adjusted), the largest monthly job growth on record.

State Representative Ryan Winkler (DFL – Golden Valley) released the following statement on today’s job news:

“Since Minnesota raised its minimum wage, restaurants and hotels have had their best two months of job gains — ever. This flies in the face of the doom and gloom promised by Republicans and the Chamber of Commerce, who claimed that any increase in the minimum wage would devastate Minnesota’s economy.

“Repealing the automatic indexing that ensures the minimum wage will keep up with inflation — one of the Chamber’s top priorities — would hurt Minnesota families. Rather than caving to the demands of the Chamber of Commerce, we need to continue to prioritize working Minnesotans and ensure families across the state have greater economic security.”
