Rep. Winkler Statement on Dayton Budget: An economy that works for everyone will require more revenue

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

ST. PAUL – Today, Governor Dayton released his budget proposal for fiscal years 2016-17. Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL-Golden Valley) released the following statement:

“Governor Dayton laid out the right priorities in his budget this morning, including funding for early learning. We know that investments in our youngest learners are the best economic investment we can make and provide real opportunity for all kids to get ahead. As a state we have failed to make enough progress for these kids.

“The governor did not include corporate tax cuts as a part of his budget, which is a stark contrast from the priorities of the newly elected Republican House majority. I agree with Governor Dayton that we need to invest in Minnesota families before we give a hand out to corporate special interests.

“While these priorities are a good start, we need to go further to build an economy that serves all hardworking Minnesotans, not just rich and powerful insiders. Doing so will require significant new investments in early learners, care workers, affordable college and a reliable transportation system.

"Governor Dayton’s budget is still small as a share of Minnesota’s overall economy and the price of government remains low. We should have the courage to continue raising revenue from the biggest winners in an unfair economy—corporations and the rich. Our future prosperity depends on it.”
