ST. PAUL – Today, year-end campaign finance reports for Minnesota’s elected officials and politicians were made available to the public online. Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL-Golden Valley) released the following statement:
“Until we pass HF 43, Minnesotans have no way of knowing just how much money is coming into their communities or who is spending it. People rightly believe that big money has too much influence in politics and that too many politicians forget the voice of the people. Passing HF 43 would be a start to restoring the public’s trust in government and helping to get big, secret money out of state politics.
“It is important when we look at spending by political parties, political action committees and candidates that we recognize that we really have no idea how much money was spent in state elections last year. Because of a loophole in campaign finance law, many special interest groups do not need to disclose all of their spending. The public deserves to know how much money is being spent to influence elections and who their elected officials are working for.”
