Legislative Update from Rep. Bob Dettmer

Tuesday, April 25, 2017

Dear Friends,

I hope you had a relaxing Easter with family and friends. Last week, House and Senate members were named to joint conference committees to debate the differences between the House and Senate versions of omnibus bills.

The committee I chair, the Veterans Affairs Committee, is a subdivision of the State Government Finance Committee in the House, and I have been named to the State Government Finance Conference Committee along with four other House members and five Senators. I look forward to continuing work on the State Government Finance bill and the important provisions it contains for our veterans community.

The House omnibus bills were passed before Easter legislative break, and many conference committees held their initial hearings last week. Committee deadlines for both policy and budget bills were set much earlier this session than they have been in the past. The reasoning behind this by House and Senate Republican leadership is to allow plenty of time for conference committees to meet and debate. Earlier deadlines also mean more time to negotiate with Governor Dayton, since no law will become law without his signature.

Here is an article from House public Information Services with more detailed information about the conference committee process: http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/sessiondaily/SDView.aspx?StoryID=12783

I will keep you updated as we continue conference committee negotiations in this last month of session.

Sincerely,

Bob
