REP. DETTMER: BUDGET SURPLUS GROWTH STRENGTHENS NEED FOR TAX RELIEF

Thursday, March 3, 2022

ST. PAUL – With Minnesota’s state budget surplus reaching another historic – and staggering – amount, State Representative Bob Dettmer (R-Forest Lake) said its time to enact permanent tax relief for families who are struggling with rising costs in the Biden/Walz economy.

“Minnesotans continue to suffer from sticker shock from the rising costs of food, gasoline, and natural gas,” Dettmer said. “With our state government fully funded and over-collecting from taxpayers by billions of dollars, it’s time that they receive significant, and permanent, tax relief.”

On February 28, Minnesota’s economic experts found a budget surplus improvement of $1.507 billion for the current cycle. The projected surplus now stands at $9.253 billion for Fiscal Year 2022-23.

“With this windfall we could eliminate the taxes on Social Security benefits, prevent the impending local business owner tax increase from taking place, provide middle class income tax relief, rebuild faltering infrastructure, and so much more,” Dettmer said. “State government has enough of your money, and now it’s time to give our taxpayers a financial break.”
