Legislative Update

Tuesday, May 12, 2015

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Next Monday, May 18th will mark the end of the 2015 regular legislative session. The House, Senate and governor are now in final budget negotiations, but I am disappointed to report that the DFL is holding up a final deal over their insistence on a new, regressive and unnecessary gas tax which would increase the cost of driving for a two-car family in our community by more than $600 per year.

With a $1.9 billion surplus reported in February and with the April general fund revenue reporting to be another $260 million above that forecasted amount, we don't need to take more from hardworking taxpayers.

What's more, a recent report by Governor Dayton's own agency, the Office of Minnesota Management and Budget, stated that "Lower gas prices are comparable to a tax cut, freeing up disposable income for spending on non-gasoline goods and services" and that it has meant "big savings for consumers." Just when people are seeing some relief at the pump, the state shouldn't demand a tax hike.

House Republicans are listening to Minnesotans who overwhelmingly oppose a gas tax increase, according to recent polls. We have put forward a transportation plan that invests $7 billion in our roads and bridges over the next decade without taking more from your family's budget.

I will keep you updated on the budget and negotiations as we near the end of session.

As always, thank you for the honor and privilege of being your state representative. If I can ever be of assistance to you or your family on a matter of state government, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Bob
