March for Life rally in St. Paul

Friday, January 22, 2016

Dear Neighbor,

It was good to see a large contingent of District 12B residents at the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life's March for Life rally Friday at the Capitol. Thousands turned out for the event and, after it concluded, I met with dozens of people from the Sauk Centre area to talk about pro-life issues.

A couple of new state laws were passed last year on this subject and here are quick summaries:

The Born Alive Protection Act stipulates that if an infant is born alive, medical professionals must take all reasonable approaches to ensure that the infant receives proper care. If reasonable services or care to the infant born alive are not provided, civil and disciplinary actions apply. The goal is to ensure that infants that are born alive as a result of an abortion are to be considered a human and have full rights.

Safe Place for Newborns helps mothers who have hidden their pregnancy or at risk of harming their newborn child. This is an existing program that we increased funding for.

Two other proposals which passed in the House did not make it through the conference committee process, but could receive another look in the 2016 session. One plan limits taxpayer-funded abortions. The other requires that facilities performing 10 or more abortions a month be licensed as outpatient surgical centers.

Thanks again to the folks who made their way to St. Paul for the rally and I look forward to continuing discussions on this matter.

Sincerely,

Paul
