Rep. Franson, House Republicans Release School Safety Agenda
Saint Paul, MN - House Republicans announced their school safety agenda yesterday, highlighting proposals to protect students in the classroom, expand access to mental health services, and hold violent offenders accountable.
Rep. Mary Franson said, “Parents should not have to fear for their children’s safety when they go to school. This agenda focuses on giving every student a secure learning environment while making sure dangerous criminals face real consequences. Our children deserve nothing less.At the same time, we must address laws that interfere with parents’ rights, including the transgender refuge state law, and make sure that gender confused children receive the care and support they actually need.”
Key provisions of the agenda include:
• Expanding school safety funding to non-public schools
• Creating school security grants such as the SHIELD Act (HF 15)
• Allowing schools more flexibility to use funding for safety improvements
• Making School Resource Officers available to every school
• Repealing or amending restrictions on doctors’ ability to use their best medical judgment
• Boosting funding for mental health treatment beds
• Establishing mandatory minimum sentences for repeat gun criminals and straw purchasers
