Representatives Rick Hansen and Mary Franson Commemorate 50th Anniversary of the Sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald

SAINT PAUL, Minn. –?Today, Minnesota House Representatives Rick Hansen (DFL-South St. Paul) and Mary Franson (GOP-Alexandria) will read a House Resolution marking the 50th Anniversary of the tragic loss of the crew of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald on the House Floor. The ship sank in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975, during a violent storm, and two of the 29 men who lost their lives, Thomas Borgeson and Nolan Church, hailed from Minnesota.

“Today, Minnesota remembers the night 50 years ago that the gales of November came early and we solemnly commemorate the tragic sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald,” said Rep. Hansen, “We honor the 29 men who lost their lives, the families and friends who were impacted.”

“Lake Superior holds a special place in Minnesota’s history, and so does the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” said Rep. Franson. “As we remember this tragedy fifty years later, we honor the courage of the crew and the lasting impact their loss had on families and communities across our state.”

The resolution commemorates the history of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and acknowledges the losses endured by the families and friends of the crew members. Representatives Hansen and Franson will present the resolution to the Minnesota Historical Society ahead of the 50th Anniversary Commemoration at Split Rock Lighthouse.
