Legislative Update (4-18-19)

Thursday, April 18, 2019

Neighbor,

Sen. Paul Utke, Rep. Matt Grossell and I joined with Minnesota Farm Bureau members for a town hall meeting Wednesday evening at the Great Northern Café in Bagley. The combined effort was a huge success.

Thank you Farm Bureau and the owner and staff at the Great Northern. Most of all, thank you to the more than 70 people from Tenstrike to Nevis and beyond that attended. We discussed a variety of timely topics and here’s a quick snapshot:

The greatest concerns were around the proposed gun-control bills moving through the House. The bills are a direct attack on our First (speech), Second (firearms), Fourth (searches and seizures) and Fifth (self-incrimination) Amendment rights.

Folks are genuinely concerned over those in the country illegally. There was opposition at the meeting to giving people who came here against the law a driver’s license, as a House bill would do. This bill, if passed, would grant special privileges over Minnesota citizens.

We also heard input on the importance of the upcoming census since Minnesota could be very close to losing a congressional seat. There also is concern over losing state representation in greater Minnesota.

We listened to veterans’ concerns about health services and talked about legislation that has been passed and what is proposed.

There was some discussion on education and what it will mean to school districts should the current House bill pass.

Overall, there was good back-and-forth discussion and I believe everyone who wanted to ask a question or make a statement had the opportunity.

Thank you once more to all those who helped make this such a successful event with a great exchange of thoughts, concerns and ideas on the most important issues we face. Your input will help me continue doing my very best to represent the people of District 2B at the Capitol.

Have a blessed Easter and I will be back soon with more from the Legislature. Bills to make up our state’s next two-year budget are scheduled to begin making their way to the House floor next week, so look for more on those proposals in upcoming emails.
