Representative Johnson Proposes Legislation Allowing Body Cameras for Law Enforcement

Friday, February 18, 2022

St. Paul, MN— Representative Brian Johnson (R-Cambridge) is writing legislation that would provide $15 million in grants to purchase body cameras for peace officers.

“Body cameras are one more way to ensure the protection of our peace officers and criminals. With cameras, incidents will be recorded, and the public can know what officers are really facing on the job,” Johnson said.

The grant is dependent on a match of 25% from non-state funds. Priority would be given to departments with less than 50 licensed peace officers. Of the grant money, 2.5% would be used for administrative costs.

The legislation is currently in the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Finance and Policy Committee for review. Information on the legislation can be found here.
