RELEASE: Representative Johnson and House Republicans Unveil Public Safety Priorities

Wednesday, March 2, 2022

ST. PAUL, MN — Representative Brian Johnson (R-Cambridge) and House Republicans held a news conference Tuesday to unveil their 2022 public safety priorities. The package focused on three key areas; crime prevention and accountability for criminals; police recruitment and retention, and holding the criminal justice system accountable.

"Minnesotans are crying out for a safer community. I am thrilled to see bipartisan interest in making Minnesota safer for us all,” Johnson said. “As a former law enforcement officer, I know what it will take to truly impact Minnesota. These are the policy changes we need to create a safer state.”

Johnson is the Republican Lead on the House Public Safety Committee. He authored and co-authored several bills in the House Republican proposal, including:

  • $15 million to law enforcement agencies for body camera grants with a preference to small agencies and a 25 percent local match requirement – HF 3356
  • Judges and prosecutors who depart from mandatory minimum sentences for crimes of violence that include a firearm must be publicly posted on the Sentencing Guidelines website – HF 3353
  • County Attorneys required to report on cases where charges are dropped – HF 3355
