REAL ID Working Group Update

Friday, January 8, 2016

Dear Friends,

This week I participated in a REAL ID working group. The goal of the group is to establish a legislative path to comply with the federal REAL ID law. Department of Homeland Security has stated that Minnesota will have 120 days' notice from a future date before TSA will not accept the current Minnesota driver's license. What does this mean for you? It means your travel plans won't be disrupted.

The House GOP has already drafted legislation that will repeal the 2009 prohibition on compliance for our Department of Public Safety. We will be taking that legislation up immediately when session begins. After legislators begin working towards compliance, Minnesota can reapply for an extension. Therefore, I see legislators making efforts to resolve the issue and make sure travel is not disrupted.

Again, there’s no need to worry about your travel plans. The last thing we want is to limit your ability to travel freely. If you still have questions about REAL ID, I hope you’ll contact my office at 651-296-4247 or rep.ron.kresha@house.mn.

More importantly, the cold weather is coming. Please stay warm and don't forget to check in on neighbors and friends. This is the time to share a warm cup of coffee or hot chocolate with a friend.

Best,

Ron
