House Republicans Support Local School Boards Calling for State Compliance with Federal Title IX Requirements

St. Paul, MN — Minnesota House Republicans, led by Education Chairs Rep. Ron Kresha and Rep. Peggy Bennett, sent a letter to the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) urging immediate compliance with federal Title IX law. The letter follows a noncompliance finding from the U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services and supports the growing number of locally elected school board members calling on state agencies to follow federal law.

The federal finding identified violations of Title IX related to sex discrimination. More than 40 school districts across Minnesota have already urged MDE and the MSHSL to act, warning that continued noncompliance could result in federal consequences.

“This situation is very troubling,” said Rep. Kresha. “When the federal government identifies a violation of Title IX, the state must respond quickly and clearly. School boards across Minnesota are right to expect accountability from the Department of Education and the High School League.”

“Our local school boards have stepped up to demand compliance with federal law, and we fully support them,” said Rep. Bennett. “It’s time for MDE and the High School League to lead by example and put their focus back on what truly matters: helping students succeed in reading, math, science, and technical education.”

Lawmakers who signed onto the letter emphasized that the effort demonstrates strong support for local education leaders and their call for immediate compliance.

A copy of the letter was sent to MDE Commissioner Willie Jett and MSHSL Board President Brent Schimek.
