News from Representative Petersburg 01-16-2015

Friday, January 16, 2015

Dear Friends,

We're off to a very productive start so far in 2015. In just the second week of session, the House was able to unanimously pass $20 million in immediate tax relief for families who start filing their taxes next week.

House File 6 conforms Minnesota's tax code to the federal tax code that will let Minnesotans take advantage of deductions on things like higher education tuition, out-of-pocket classroom expenses for teachers, and mortgage insurance premiums.

Provided the Senate acts quickly, and the bill is signed by the Governor, this will mean that Minnesotans won't have to amend or wait to file their tax returns to take advantage of the deductions they are entitled to. It's great to see the House and Senate working quickly to deliver results that will mean more money in the pockets of families on their taxes.

The Owatonna People's Press had a good story I wanted to pass along regarding Highway 14, and where it fits into this session's transportation discussions. I will continue pushing for Highway 14 to get the attention it deserves. This is a project of huge regional importance that has strong support from area legislators on both sides. If you have any questions or comments you'd like to share, please send them along.

Also, if you missed it in last week's update or in our local papers, here's a link to my piece in the Owatonna People's Press about the House GOP priorities and our starting points of discussion for the 2015 session.
