News from Rep. Peggy Bennett 5-13-2016

Friday, May 13, 2016

This week in St. Paul, we’re passing a number of smaller, individual bills. We’re still waiting on a compromise for road and bridge funding, middle-class tax relief, and other supplemental budgets. Next week will be very busy, and I anticipate some longer sessions as we wrap up the biennium.

Roads and Bridges

On Friday, House Republicans held a press conference urging the governor to not raise taxes on hardworking Minnesotans to pay for road and bridge improvements. Residents in our area want funding for roads and bridges, but don’t want to pay more every time they fill up their car with gas. Last year, in a survey of our district, 71% of residents opposed a gas tax increase while just 17% were in favor. That’s pretty convincing to me that we need to fund roads and bridges without the state taking more of your family’s budget.

Family Visits

Recently, I was fortunate to spend some time with my nephew, Quin, my niece, Ellie, and one of Ellie's best friends, Abby, who visited me at the Capitol. It’s always special bringing my family to the Capitol to share in the legislative process. Getting young people involved in civic engagement is critical for our future, and I’m proud of Quin, Ellie, and Abby for taking the time to experience the Minnesota House.

Weekend Events

Tomorrow marks a volunteer opportunity as the Lakes Foundation of Albert Lea is hosting a cleanup of Albert Lea Lake. I’ll be attending, and I hope to see you there. Our lake is a great resource for our area, and this is an opportunity to give back. The event is from 9 a.m. until noon, and we’ll meet at Frank Hall Park to start.

On Sunday, I’ll be presenting a House Resolution to Colin Laurie as he becomes an Eagle Scout. Making it all the way to an Eagle Scout is truly impressive and worthy of commendation. Congrats, Colin, on this amazing accomplishment!
