News from Rep. Peggy Bennett 2-17-2017

Dear Neighbors,

Get ready to head outside and enjoy a sneak-peak of spring! Even though we know there’s still some Minnesota winter left, this weekend will be a welcome reprieve. I hope to see some of you as I’m taking Colter for a warm walk around town!

Helping Firefighters

I just introduced a bill that could help firefighters around the state. This legislation would create a cancer registry for firefighters to try and find the cause of higher cancer rates in this profession, as well as help identify ways firefighters can protect themselves from getting cancer in the first place when they're on the job.

The idea for this bill came after three local firefighters were diagnosed with cancer. I think with more information on equipment, types of cancer, and the types of fires these heroes are fighting, we can start to prevent cancer around the state. If you’re interested, I sat down with Fox 9 to talk about the legislation and its potential impact.

Local Bills

I’m once again authoring a bill to fund improvements to the Stables’ neighborhood sewer system. I carried this bill last year, and it was included in the bonding bill, but Governor Dayton vetoed it. I’m hopeful to once again have this included in any bonding agreement.

The other local bill I introduced yesterday funds the Blazing Star Trail. We’ve been trying for years to fund this trail, and I’ll continue to work towards that end.

Capitol Visitors

Angie and Josh Lair, along with their sons Tyler and Brady, good friends from rural Glenville stopped by my office to see me and I had a chance to give them a short tour of the Capitol building. I always love it when parents bring their children to the Capitol. It is so important for young people to be exposed to the inner workings of our government as well as experience firsthand the beauty and historical richness of our Capitol building!

Pastor Kent Otterman and his wife Cathy also joined me this week. I invited Pastor Kent to give the opening prayer as Chaplain of the Day. Pastor Kent is the chaplain at Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea, and also pastors Round Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Glenville and Faith Lutheran Church in London.  He gave a beautiful prayer about wisdom - one of the best opening prayers I've heard. Thank you, Pastor Kent!

I hope you enjoy the warm weekend. If you don’t see me around town, please don’t hesitate to call or email my office.

Have a great weekend!
