Legislative Update – January 7, 2019

Monday, January 7, 2019

Dear Neighbors:

Welcome to 2019! The legislative session begins tomorrow. A few reminders and updates as we head into a busy week.

Opening Week

This morning I attended the inauguration of our state’s constitutional officers, including Gov. Walz. Tomorrow, it’s the Legislature’s turn, as we convene for the start of the 2019 session at noon. On Wednesday, legislators will be attending an all-day conference, and on Thursday, they will attend an all-day training. Committees begin meeting the week of January 14.

Chat with Dave - January 13

A reminder that the session’s first Chat with Dave - an informal conversation with neighbors - will be held on Sunday, January 13, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. Note that there is a room change, though the general location stays the same: It’ll now be in the Village View Room at the Highland Park Community Center, 1978 Ford Pkwy, St Paul, MN 55116. Please join us!

Prenatal to Three Policy Forum - January 14

And a reminder that the next quarterly Prenatal to Three Policy Forum will be held on the morning of Monday, January 14 at the University of St. Thomas. The event will be webcast as well. Details and registration at www.p3minnesota.org.

Committee Assignments Announced

In December, I shared that I’ve been appointed to chair an innovative committee - Early Childhood Finance & Policy - that will report to both the health & human services and education committees in the House. You can follow the committee’s work here.

Since then, the rest of the committee assignments have been announced. You can view all of the committee assignments here. In addition to chairing the early childhood committee, I will be serving on the Health & Human Services Policy Committee, the Public Safety & Criminal Justice Reform Finance & Policy Division, the Rules & Legislative Administration Committee, and the Subcommittee on Legislative Process Reform.

Minnesota Awarded Early Childhood Grant

Exciting news as the early-childhood committee which I chair begins its work! Minnesota has been awarded a $4.7 million federal grant to help build a more comprehensive early learning landscape for children and families. You can view the press release here. This is an important investment for the future success of our youngest Minnesotans.

Thank you for the honor of serving our community again this coming term. Please reach out anytime.
