RELEASE: Minnesota House Expected to Approve Historic Gun Safety Legislation

Monday, April 29, 2019

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Tonight, the Minnesota House of Representatives is expected to approve a public safety budget for the upcoming biennium, including historic gun safety measures long championed by Rep. Dave Pinto (DFL – St. Paul).

Rep. Pinto is the chief author of a bill to require criminal background checks on all gun sales and a co-author of a bill allowing law enforcement to restrict access to firearms by those proven in court to be a significant danger to themselves or others.

“Minnesotans are demanding that we do more to keep guns out of the hands of people who have shown themselves to be dangerous,” said Rep. Pinto. “Criminal background checks and extreme risk protection orders have broad public support, are in use in other states, and will help make our communities safer.”

A fact sheet about steps other states have recently taken to address gun violence is available here.

Other provisions in the budget authored by Rep. Pinto would address gender violence, ensure proper use of eyewitness identification procedures, and support community-based youth intervention programs.
