Report from the Capitol - MPPOA’s Legislator of the Year & Speaker Pro Tempore

Dear Granite City Neighbors, 

I hope this email finds you having a stellar summer! I’ve been recovering from the grind of session by hitting the pool with Polly, fishing, and listening to audiobooks while I catch up on yard work.

Recently, I had the opportunity to focus on two areas of my work that are near and dear to my heart: my accomplishments to support Minnesota’s police officers, and my leadership position as Speaker Pro Tempore.

On Saturday, I received the honor of a lifetime. I attended the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association’s annual convention, where I was named their “Legislator of the Year” for 2023. It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by the MPPOA, and to work with them to ensure we’re enacting laws that support Minnesota’s 10,400 police officers who put their lives on the line for our communities.

It was fun and fulfilling to celebrate the award with our local St. Cloud law enforcement

I am so proud of what I have accomplished by partnering with MPPOA, from ensuring first responders received workers’ compensation benefits when they contracted COVID, funding for officer recruitment and retention, support for officer mental health treatment, and officer tuition relief. I’ll always work hard for the brave men and women who put on that uniform to keep Minnesotans safe.

Polly and I spent three days at the convention, where we had opportunities to connect with police officers and their families, and even go fishing with them!

Last week, I chatted with PBS’s Mary Lahammer about how my two dream jobs connect to each other: Speaker Pro Tempore of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and freshman football coach at Sauk Rapids Rice High School. I had a blast talking about my role as a presiding officer, the responsibility of guiding the pace of our historical legislative session, and how it directly correlates to playing and coaching football.
