Release: Rep. Morrison welcomes House Capital Investment Committee to Shorewood & Tonka Bay

Wednesday, October 20, 2021

Saint Paul, Minn. – Yesterday, the Minnesota House Capital Investment Committee continued its statewide tour of Minnesota, visiting sites – including one in Shorewood and another in Tonka Bay – with proposed investments in regional economies. Rep. Kelly Morrison (DFL – Deephaven) hosted the committee as they learned about proposals for pedestrian improvements road reconstruction on Galpin Lake Road, and a water main line replacement in the city of Tonka Bay. Rep. Morrison is authoring legislation to make these projects a reality for House District 33B.

“Our residents deserve updated infrastructure that enhances public safety and ensures reliable access to clean water,” said Rep. Morrison. “I’m grateful the House Capital Investment Committee prioritized a stop in our community to see firsthand the improvements worthy of investment. With bond interest rates low and an opportunity to create good paying construction jobs, this is a critical time to fund our future in the region.”

The Galpin Lake Road project would provide a combination of sidewalk and trail along the eastern side of Galpin Lake Road between Highway 5 and Highway 7. This will complete a gap within the existing network and connect people walking and biking to Excelsior Elementary School and downtown Excelsior. These improvements could be bundled with a full street reconstruction and water main improvements along the corridor.

Tonka Bay’s aging water main pipes have had multiple breaks in recent years. Mayor Adam Jennings and city staff presented to the committee the need to replace the line that is reaching its end-of-life span. The water main line in Tonka Bay was installed in 1974.

The House Capital Investment Committee’s tour continues today and Thursday.
