Legislative Update- February 28, 2019

Thursday, February 28, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

This week at the Capitol was very productive and engaging! I hope you have had a safe week in our very snowy February. I have several updates for you:

A Historic Sovereignty Day at the Capitol

Last Monday marked a historic day at the legislature, where a meeting between the Minnesota House and the state’s 11 sovereign tribal nations took place, recognizing Sovereignty Day for the first time. This full-day event featured presentations about history, culture, and tribal law.

This day was filled with powerful and moving stories. I took this as an opportunity to reflect on our past, and focus on a path to forge a future together with our tribal neighbors throughout our communities.  Watch full video of tribal presentations here or check out the Pioneer Press’s coverage here.

Gov. Walz’s Budget for One Minnesota

Following Sovereignty Day, Governor Walz released his proposal for a new two-year state budget, which he calls a “Budget for One Minnesota.” His plan prioritizes education, health care, and community prosperity. You can read more about the state budget plan here.

In the coming days and weeks, there will be a more in-depth discussion about the budget’s specific components. At the Legislature, we'll be thoroughly reviewing the budget blueprint, and drafting a plan.

A Great Start for Every Child

HF 1226, a bill of which I’m the chief author, was discussed in the Early Childhood Committee last week. This bill would take a very important step towards supporting Minnesota children, allowing our most tender an opportunity to get off to a good start. One of the significant ways my bill on home visits accomplishes positive outcomes is by increasing mother-child attachment and producing better birth outcomes. Conducting home visits serves as a resource for new mothers in addition to ensuring new babies are in a safe and nurturing environment. House file 1226 would fund and a system that provides much-needed support for our at risk families and new mothers in a way that puts our children first.

After our bipartisan press conference, I am happy to say that the bill received approval from the committee.

Prescription Drug Legislation Moving Forward

My bill to remove the pharmacist “gag” rule has advanced to another committee. The House Commerce Committee will discuss HF 668, which would prevent health insurance companies and Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) from creating policies that keep a pharmacist from informing patients when they can purchase their prescription off-the-shelf or out-of-pocket for less than their co-pay. I’m encouraged by the bill’s progress because all Minnesotans deserve access to affordable and lifesaving medication they need and rely on.

Constituent Visits

Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet with the Maple Grove Robotics Team for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Day at the Capitol. It was exciting to learn about their work and see the final products!
I also met with constituents visiting on behalf of the American Muslim Society. Thanks for taking time out of your day to come to the Capitol!
