Legislative Update- July 31, 2019

Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you and your loved ones have been enjoying summer!

I’ve been out and about in the community, connecting with neighbors and catching up with family and friends.

Groundbreaking of Passion Church in Maple Grove.
I also recently had the opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity and the Homes for All Coalition to build an affordable home for a family in need. The bipartisan group of legislators joined together in St. Paul late last month. Twin Cities PBS mentioned our work in a recent segment discussing our state’s growing needs for affordable housing.

Improving the lives of Minnesotans starts with a strong foundation, which begins with a safe and affordable home. Although the legislature made some progress in the area of affordable housing, I’m committed to continuing the work next session on solutions for lower property taxes and ways to stabilize rent in our community.

New Laws in Minnesota

Several new laws took effect earlier this month, and more begin August 1. Starting this Thursday, Minnesota motorists who use their cell phones while driving will have to use ‘hands-free mode’ on all mobile devices. There are some exceptions, such as one touch activation and in emergency situations. As distracted driving is becoming more prevalent with advancing technology, tragic fatalities and preventable injuries are on the rise. Minnesotans deserve to be safe on our roadways, and the new ‘hands-free’ law will help build sound habits behind the wheel that help keep us all safer.

Property Tax/Renters Refund Reminder

This is a friendly reminder to file for your property tax or renters refund, which is due on August 15. Click here to see if you qualify. Several homeowners and renters are eligible for a refund, but many forget to file and miss out on the opportunity. If you’re eligible, have filed, and are wondering the status of your refund, I’d be happy to check in on it for you. Please contact me at 651-296-5502 or via email at rep.kristin.bahner@house.mn.

National Night Out

National Night Out is just around the corner. Maple Grove is having a kickoff party on Tuesday, August 6 at the Maple Grove Community Center from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. I’ll be visiting neighborhoods throughout the community and would love to stop by if you’re hosting a block party. If you’re interested, you can give me a call or send me an email with the details. You can find more information from the City of Maple Grove here and the City of Osseo here.

Keep in Touch

Please always feel free to reach out with any questions, input, or ideas for the next legislative session in February. I value your feedback!

Sincerely,
Kristin Bahner
State Representative
