Legislative Update - August 27, 2019

Tuesday, August 27, 2019

Dear neighbors,

It’s hard to believe that August is coming to an end, but that means it’s time for the Minnesota State Fair! I’m looking forward to attending with my family, trying some new food, and riding the giant slide. I hope that you’ll stop by the House of Representatives booth during your visit. If you’re at the fair on Wednesday, please come by and say hello! I’ll be at the booth talking with folks from 12 to 2 p.m.

At the Capitol

Earlier this month, I represented our state at two national gatherings in Nashville, Tennessee. These conferences were a great opportunity to learn more about what other states are doing, figure out what’s working and what’s not, and find new ways to solve problems. I’m looking forward to using that knowledge here in Minnesota!

The NCEL conference was well attended by Minnesotans. It’s clear that our state values the environment!

At the annual National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL) conference, my colleagues and I learned more about building a thriving carbon-free economy, protecting pollinators and other wildlife, preventing plastic pollution in lakes and rivers, and other important issues. Minnesota is doing some groundbreaking work to protect our environment, so we had the opportunity to share what we’re working on with other attendees as well.

Rep. Rick Hansen and I hard at work during the NCSL conference. In this photo, we’re at a business meeting of the Natural Resources and Infrastructure Committee.

The National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) gathering kept me busy with committee meetings, lectures, panel discussions, and more. I enjoyed working on environmental and infrastructure issues with experts and legislators from across the nation.

Since I was out of town, I was unable to attend a rally against gun violence at the State Capitol. However, I want to tell you I heard you! I’ll continue to support common-sense measures that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.

I had a great time at India Fest at the Capitol earlier this month. There was great music, dancing, and incredible samosas!

Last week I was fortunate to get a tour of the Regional Council of Carpenters facility from our own Kim Nelson. What an incredible facility for education and learning!

I recently spent a morning with representatives from the Minnesota Nurses Association. I appreciated hearing their stories and their thoughts about important issues they face.

In the Community

Many thanks to everyone who attended the panel discussion about climate change and clean energy that I hosted earlier this month! I enjoyed hearing ideas from other panelists and community members. Together, we can work toward a clean energy future for Minnesota. Media coverage of the event is available here.

Congressman Dean Phillips was a special guest at our Minnetonka Rotary meeting.

I’ve enjoyed seeing familiar faces and meeting new people at the great events that have taken place in our community this summer. Please stay in touch!

Sincerely,

Patty Acomb
State Representative
