SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Representative Ruth Richardson (DFL – Mendota Heights) issued the following statement:
“George Floyd’s life mattered. He should still be here today. Despite the guilty verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, more work needs to be done to dismantle racist systems and ensure justice and safety for all Minnesotans.
As our country’s modern history demonstrates, the public safety systems that were created date back well before the Jim Crow era and since then, our police structure has failed too many Black men, women, and children. As legislators, community members, neighbors, and parents, we can make positive, long overdue changes to update and reform our public safety in Minnesota that ensures everyone can get home safely.”
