Special Session - Ag and Housing Bill

Friday, May 24, 2019
Good afternoon, my friend!!

Today at 10 am, Speaker Hortman gavelled in the Special Session called yesterday by Governor Walz.

We just took up and passed the Ag & Housing Budget bill that passed 114-14.

I am proud to serve on the House Ag Committee and look forward to the benefits Minnesota will see from this bill.

The Ag portion of the bill works to sustain Minnesota agriculture along with promoting the future of farming. Here are some highlights:
  • Strengthens farmer mental health counseling
  • Props up our struggling dairy industry
  • Increases preparedness for disasters
  • Improves grant funding for food access across the state
  • Promotes beginning farmers in rural and urban locations.

The Senate has an Ag & Housing committee, so our bill reflects both Ag and Housing provisions. The Housing portion of the bill:

  • Establishes new lease requirements that protect tenants
  • Modifies bonding for housing
  • Expands eligibility for home improvement areas and manufactured home parks.

Lastly, this bill contains a $40 million investment in border-to-border broadband to support all of Minnesota to ensure that all communities in MN have access to high-speed internet.

Here is the bill, summaries, and spreadsheets. The next bill up in the Legacy Bill.
