Update from Rep. Tabke: Paycheck Protection & Child Care Grants

Thursday, April 2, 2020

Tabke

We’ve covered a lot of resources that are quickly becoming available to our small businesses, including ones administered via executive order and disaster loans from the Small Business Administration. Another resource available is the federal Paycheck Protection Program. The Paycheck Protection Program provides forgivable loans to small businesses to pay their employees during the COVID-19 crisis and applies to, among others, sole-proprietors, independent contractors, gig workers, and self-employed individuals.

The loan proceeds can be used to cover payroll costs, mortgage interest, rent, and utility costs. You can find more information on the Paycheck Protection Program here

Child Care Grants

In Minnesota, approximately 420,000 children under the age of 12 live in a household of an essential worker within a critical sector, and about 270,000 of them will need care during this time. In the package of legislation passed last week in response to COVID-19, legislators included $30 million in one-time grants to child care providers. Monthly grant awards start at $4,500. All providers awarded a grant are also eligible to receive an additional $1,000 per month if they meet certain criteria.

Applications for this emergency aid are now available through Child Care Aware MN here.

2020 Census

Despite the pandemic, the 2020 U.S. Census continues, though there are changes being made in response to COVID-19.  By now, most of you should have received instructions in the mail on how to self-respond. If you haven’t done so yet, you’ve got time. The self-responding deadline has recently been extended to August 14, but we recommend completing it as soon as possible.

You can complete the Census and find more information at my2020Census.gov, or by calling their offices at (844) 330-2020. Non-English phone options are available here.
