Hello Friends,

The 2023 legislative session is over, and I’m proud to say we finished our work on time and with a long list of accomplishments for Shakopee and the entire state. We’re not scheduled to return to official legislative work until next year, and during the interim I’m looking forward to speaking with you about this session’s accomplishments.

We have a couple upcoming opportunities for us to meet as a community this summer to talk about our legislative work, including a Town Hall and a series of summer coffee hours where I hope you can join me.

For our Session Wrap-Up Town Hall, we’ll be at the Shakopee VFW on Wednesday, June 21, at 5:30pm. Everyone is welcome to join as I provide an overview of our work at the State Capitol this year, what got signed into law, what it means for you, and the work that remains.

I’m excited to share that we’ll also be joined by Rep. Jerry Newton, the Chair of the House’s Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, and a staple at the Minnesota Legislature. I hope you can join us! I’ll also have more informal Summer Coffee Hours that you can attend as well. These are great for smaller conversations about legislative issues. These will be at the Shakopee Brewhall from 9-10:30am. The first of these will be on Saturday, June 17, with two more on Saturday, July 15, and Saturday, August 19.

If you’d like to get caught up on our work this session, you can read more about our final budget bills using our nonpartisan Session Daily stories: Veterans and Military Affairs, Housing, Higher Education, Legacy, Agriculture, Early Education, Public Safety and Judiciary, K-12 Education, Jobs and Labor, Environment and Energy, Commerce, State Government and Elections, Human Services, Taxes, Transportation, and Health.

And while not technically part of our state budget, but still a consequential bill for state investment, is our Capital Investment bill. Otherwise known as a bonding bill, this was one of our last votes of the legislative session, and it delivered $2.6 billion in one-time investments in infrastructure projects to communities throughout the state - including millions for Shakopee. Other important bills outside of our budget bills we passed at the end of session include Paid Family and Medical Leave, and the final version of our bill to legalize adult-use cannabis.

I’m looking forward to talking about these bills and more! If you can’t make any of these upcoming events, don’t worry, you can always feel free to reach out with any questions or comments you have on our work.

I look forward to hearing from you!
