Hello Friend, Though we wrapped up our legislative work in June, we’re just seeing our work from this year’s session become officially enacted, with the bulk of our budget and laws going into effect on July 1 and a few more at the start of this month. MPR had good summaries for both the July and August laws, but if you’re looking for in-depth descriptions of what was passed, you can find them here: There are a lot of good laws in there, all of which were the product of bipartisan compromise due to the tie in the House, but one in particular I’d like to highlight is the Minnesota Consumer Data Privacy Act. This new law grants Minnesotans the right to prevent their data from being sold or used to target advertising at them. In the case of sensitive personal data, including location data, companies would have to secure your permission in advance before using it in this manner. Fox 9 covered this new law the other week, and you can check out their coverage here. |
If you submit a request to a company regarding your personal data, the company must respond within 45 days. If they fail to meet this deadline, you can then file a complaint with the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office. To find out more information about these rights and how to exercise them, I encourage you to visit the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office website here. This is just one of several new laws making a difference in Minnesotans’ lives, and I was happy to support it. If you have any other questions on what we passed this year and what’s been enacted, always feel free to reach out!
