RELEASE: Rep. Kaohly Vang Her Votes For, House Passes the Driver’s Licenses For All Bill

Tuesday, January 31, 2023

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Last night, the Minnesota House passed HF 4, the ‘Driver’s Licenses for All’ bill, permitting undocumented immigrants to apply for driver’s licensure,  take a driver’s exam, and earn a driver’s license. The bill restores driver’s license privileges removed by former Gov. Pawlenty in 2003. Rep. Kaohly Vang Her (DFL - St. Paul) co-authored and voted for the legislation. The bill passed on a vote of 69-60.

“This bill is important for the safety of everyone on our roads, and I’m happy to have voted for it and passed it on the House floor today,” said Rep. Her.  “Undocumented immigrants are an essential part of our workforce. Their labor provides at lead $1.56 billion of value added to Minnesota’s economy. I’m proud to supply our workers safe access to our roads considering the critical work they do for the rest of us.”

The bill has garnered support from law enforcement, labor groups, chambers of commerce, agribusiness, faith-based organizations, and workers’ rights advocates. The Senate’s companion bill is being passed through its committees, and Gov. Walz has signaled he will sign the bill into law.
