2023 Her Header

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you and yours are safe and warm as cold weather sets in this winter, even with some unseasonable high temps in the forecast. A quick reminder that Minnesota’s “cold weather rule” is now in effect, which protects residents from having their electric or natural gas service shut off between October 1 and April 30.

To ensure your service is safe from disconnection, you must make and keep a payment plan that you and your utility provider agree on. More information is available on the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s website

The Work on Pensions Continues

As Chair of the Legislative Commission on Pensions and Retirement, this year I authored the bipartisan 2023 Pensions and Retirement Budget Bill - which passed unanimously in the House. It delivered the largest single investment in our statewide pension plans in Minnesota’s history, allocating $496 million to alleviate inflationary pressures on our retirees and active members while increasing overall plan health.

But the work doesn’t stop there.

Last weekend, I was able to spend time with Education Minnesota, listening to concerns around teacher pension and to share my vision and strategy for 2024. The work of educating our children is not an easy task, and I have an incredible amount of gratitude for the investment these teachers make in our kids. Shout out to them for spending an entire Saturday planning for the upcoming session!

Nyob zoo xyoo tshiab! Happy Hmong New Year!

While many Minnesotans won’t be celebrating the New Year until the evening of December 31, our Hmong Community rang in the celebrations shortly after Thanksgiving. This year I was one of the keynote speakers at the celebrations held at the St. Paul RiverCentre.

It was an honor to share a welcome message and be part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony to ring in the new year. Thank you to all of my colleagues for celebrating this important event. Special shoutout to Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Melvin Carter for spending the day in the Hmong community.

Resources Available for Kidney Health

Did you know the Hmong community experiences a rate of kidney disease higher than the general population? Kidney health is an issue very personal to me. Diagnosed at age 16 with IgA Nephropathy, I have been able to stave off kidney failure for decades. Preventative care, routine doctor visits, regular lab work, and a healthy lifestyle can help people live productive lives.

Recently, the National Kidney Foundation joined with Hmong American Partnership to provide education and resources for the Hmong community. I was honored to join them and speak about my own experiences with the disease.

The National Kidney Foundation is a great source of information, from understanding kidney health to learning more about risk factors and causes. You can find more information on their website, here

Name A New Snowplow!

What’s become a fun, annual tradition is now back - the contest for naming the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s new snowplows! Do you have a name worthy of joining past winners like Clearopathra, Sleetwood Mac, and Blader Tot Hotdish?

Submit your creative ideas for the “Name a Snowplow” contest by Dec. 15!

A New State Seal, Finalists for the Flag

Minnesota is one step closer to creating the final design for our updated state flag - one that is more inclusive and representative of our state. A nonpartisan commission went through a lengthy and thorough process to narrow it down to six flag designs:

State Flag Finalists

Last week, a seal design was decided upon. There will still be minor tweaks to colors and placement, but I’m excited to see what the final result is in January. What is your favorite design?
