Legislative Update from Rep. Jay Xiong

Saturday, April 22, 2023

Greetings Eastsiders,

Happy Earth Day! We’ve had an incredibly busy week again at the Capitol as we prepare budget bills to head to the floor. I’ve been working with my colleagues in the House and Senate to prepare our Jobs budget bill, which includes work from the Workforce Development Committee, Economic Development Committee, and the Labor and Industry Committee. Once passed, it will be one of the most robust investments in Minnesota’s economy in history, with an emphasis on small businesses and job training.

Small businesses are the heartbeat of Minnesota’s economy, and DFLers are committed to supporting and encouraging small businesses to open and thrive. The Jobs budget bill invests in systems to help lift up struggling businesses and lower the barrier to entry for new businesses while making investments to train Minnesota’s workforce so everyone can access a well-paying job.

This Week on the Floor

The Minnesota House passed several budget bills off the floor this week, including the Environment and Climate budget, the Veterans budget, the State Government and Elections budget, the Transportation budget, the Housing budget, the Legacy budget, the Agriculture budget, the Early Childhood budget, the Children and Families budget, and the Higher Education budget. To say we’ve been busy is an understatement!

The Governor’s State of the State Address

Wednesday night, Governor Walz delivered the State of the State address from the House Floor. Now that we’re 100 days into his’s second term, we can already look back and see all of the great things we’ve gotten done for Minnesotans together.

It’s no coincidence we are making immense progress this session: We have the youngest and most diverse legislature in our state’s history, with leaders who are committed to getting things done for Minnesotans.
