Legislative Update![]() Dear Friends and Neighbors, It’s been a busy couple of weeks here at the Capitol, as we’ve been working hard to get our budget bills through the Minnesota House. We're almost there—only a few bills left to wrap up before session adjourns in just 9 days. However, some of my Democrat colleagues are starting to worry we might be running out of time to finish the job. Let me remind you: Republicans showed up and got to work on Day 1. Unfortunately, some of our Democrat colleagues decided to take an extended vacation from St. Paul for 23 days—while still cashing those taxpayer-funded paychecks. For a quick laugh (or maybe frustration), you can check out Rep. Dawn Gillman shutting down Rep. Tina Liebling during a committee hearing [HERE]. As the budget bills continue to make their way through the House floor, I’m hopeful that the few remaining bills will be approved early next week. The Senate is doing the same, and once both chambers pass their versions, any differences will be ironed out in conference committees before the final bills head to the Governor. Now, I promised you last fall that I would work hard to lower taxes and reduce government spending. That’s exactly what I’ve been doing. I’m voting for bills that aim to right-size our government, and voting against those that would lock in irresponsible spending or increase our tax burdens. Why? Because last session, Democrats and Governor Walz wasted an $18 billion surplus, and they raised your taxes by an additional $10 billion. Now, just two years later, we’re looking at a $6 billion deficit. Meanwhile, the size of state government grew by nearly 40%, with 6,000 new employees and hundreds of millions in new salaries. It’s time for a change, and I’m doing my part to ensure your hard-earned tax dollars are spent wisely.
Happy Fishing Opener, Minnesota!![]() Grab your tackle box and dust off those rods—Minnesota’s Fishing Opener is here! This weekend marks a treasured tradition across our state, as anglers of all ages head out to lakes and rivers in search of walleye, northern pike, and good old-fashioned relaxation. Whether you're casting from a boat at sunrise, teaching your kids how to bait a hook, or simply enjoying the peaceful rhythm of the water, the Fishing Opener is about more than just the catch—it's about community, memories, and the joy of the great outdoors. To all the early risers, cabin-goers, and weekend warriors: tight lines and safe travels! May your coolers be full, your stories big (but mostly true), and your time with family and friends unforgettable. Here's to another great season on Minnesota’s beautiful waters.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month! This month, we're shining a light on an issue that touches every corner of our communities: mental health. On May 5, President Donald J. Trump officially proclaimed May 2025 as National Mental Health Awareness Month, calling on Americans to support those living with mental illness, promote open conversations, and embrace innovative approaches to care. In his proclamation, the President emphasized that mental illness doesn’t discriminate—it can affect anyone, from any walk of life. He highlighted the work of the Make America Healthy Again Commission, which is focused on root-cause solutions like better nutrition, expanded treatment options, and gold-standard research. Importantly, he reaffirmed support for our veterans, ensuring they have access to the mental health care and suicide prevention resources they need and deserve. Here in Minnesota, we’re doing our part too. This session, I authored House File 2468, a bill that invests in the mental well-being of our construction workers. This industry sees high rates of mental health struggles—and it's time we step up. The bill allocates funding to promote mental health through outreach, stigma-reduction strategies, and worksite-based supports. Construction workers build our communities; they shouldn’t have to bear mental burdens alone. Mental health matters—this month and every month. Let’s keep the conversation going and work toward a healthier, stronger Minnesota.
Happy Mother's Day!![]() This weekend, we pause to celebrate the incredible women who shape our lives—our mothers, grandmothers, stepmoms, mother figures, and all those who give so selflessly to their families and communities. To all the moms out there: thank you for your strength, your love, your wisdom, and your patience. You wear so many hats—caregiver, teacher, cheerleader, provider—and often do it all without asking for anything in return. You are truly the heart of the home and the foundation of our families. On this Mother’s Day, I hope you're able to take a well-deserved break, feel appreciated, and spend time doing what brings you joy. Whether it's breakfast in bed, a walk outside, or simply some peace and quiet—today is about you. Happy Mother’s Day, and thank you for everything you do!
Looking Ahead! As we head into the final few weeks of session, your thoughts, questions, and ideas are more important than ever! These last few weeks are when the real work happens—and your input is what keeps me motivated and focused on what matters most to you. Whether you’re curious about the bills we’re working on or have something else on your mind, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to listen and to work on solutions that reflect your priorities. You can always connect with me by phone or email at rep.nathan.nelson@house.mn.gov. It’s truly an honor to represent you at the Capitol, and together, we’re building a brighter future for Minnesota—one idea, one conversation at a time. Take care, and let's finish strong! Sincerely, Representative Nathan Nelson Minnesota House of Representatives, District 11B |
