From the Capitol to the Countryside: Rep. Nathan Nelson’s Take on What Comes Next

ST. PAUL, MN – As the 2025 regular legislative session comes to a close, Representative Nathan Nelson (R-Hinckley), who serves as Co-Vice Chair of the Children and Families Finance and Policy Committee and sits on the Environment and Natural Resources and Agriculture Finance and Policy Committees, released the following statement:

“This session has been a mix of frustration and fulfillment—but through it all, I’ve stayed focused on the needs of the people I represent in District 11B. Whether I’m in St. Paul or at home in Hinckley, my commitment is the same: protect our way of life, support hard working families, and fight for rural Minnesota.

As Co-Vice Chair of the Children and Families Committee, I worked to ensure that our policies strengthen—not burden—families. I was proud to champion legislation that expanded access to child care in Greater Minnesota and pushed for more local control in family services. Strong families are the bedrock of strong communities.

In agriculture, I’ve continued to advocate for family farmers and producers who are the backbone of our rural economy. I helped lead efforts to increase mental health resources for farmers and fought to make sure Ag dollars actually reach the people working the land—not just those in boardrooms or metro offices.

As someone who loves the outdoors and understands the importance of stewardship, I also stood firm for common-sense conservation and local input on land management decisions. Our natural resources are a gift, and we have a responsibility to care for them without letting state bureaucracy override rural voices.

While we accomplished a lot, the need for a special session is frustrating and, frankly, avoidable. When some legislators chose not to show up at the start of session, it stalled progress and put Minnesotans at a disadvantage. We can—and must—do better.

As we head into the special session, my focus will be on passing a responsible budget that respects taxpayers, strengthens local economies, and puts families, not politics, first.

To everyone in District 11B: thank you for the trust you place in me. I’ll continue to fight for you and keep you updated every step of the way. Let’s finish this work with integrity and purpose—because that’s what you deserve.”

More information about the special session will be released in the coming days.
