Legislative Update

Nelson

The gavel is officially down, and the 2026 Legislative Session is underway!

On Tuesday, we returned to the House floor, beginning this year’s session with a remembrance ceremony honoring our dear Speaker Emerita, Melissa Hortman. Melissa was an extraordinary leader—steady, compassionate, and unwavering in her commitment to the people of Minnesota. Her desk will remain empty throughout the session, marked by her photograph and fresh roses, serving as a quiet tribute to her leadership and dedication to the House of Representatives.

This was a sobering way to start the year, marking the first time Democrats and Republicans have gathered in the chamber since the tragic loss of Melissa and Mark. They were not just public servants—they were deeply loved by family and friends, and deeply respected by all who had the privilege of serving alongside them.

As we move through this year’s session, we face many challenges, compounded by the grief so many of us feel from the tragedies of the past year. Among the most pressing is addressing the rampant fraud that continues to drain hard-earned taxpayer dollars.

Minnesotans are feeling the strain of rising costs and wasted resources. Fraud has now drained an estimated $9 billion—roughly $3,840 per household. Those are dollars families could have spent on food, housing, childcare, or heat, yet they vanish into the hands of fraudsters. That’s why stopping fraud remains one of my top priorities this session, including advancing HF1, which would establish an independent Office of the Inspector General to ensure accountability and protect your hard-earned tax dollars.

Addressing this challenge, just like last year, will require cooperation, honest conversations, and a willingness to work together despite our differences. While this can make progress more difficult, it also gives us the chance to focus on practical solutions that truly matter to Minnesota families.

When working on legislation like this—where opinions are often sharply divided—it’s crucial that we rise above the noise. We must prioritize practical solutions over politics, focus on results that directly benefit Minnesota families, and work with honesty and respect, even when it’s hard. The work we do now isn’t about headlines or gaining political points—it’s about real people, real communities, and protecting what matters most: our families, our neighborhoods, our schools, and the hard-earned resources that help keep Minnesota strong. It’s about making thoughtful decisions that ensure every child has a safe place to learn, every family can afford the basics, and every community has the support it needs to thrive.

Melissa’s legacy reminds us of the importance of leadership, civility, and service. It is up to all of us to carry that forward in our work, in our communities, and in our lives.

I look forward to keeping you all updated as we move through this year’s session. My legislation may not always make the flashy headlines, but I promise it will always remain centered at the heart of our community.

Sincerely,

Representative Nathan Nelson
