Capitol Newsletter from Rep. Paul Novotny

Friday, March 22, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been a busy week in St. Paul with both the 1st and 2nd committee deadlines today, Friday. This means that much of our work has been spent in committee meetings discussing and voting on bills that need to meet these deadlines to stay “alive” for the rest of the legislative session.

We have been especially busy in the Public Safety Committee where I serve as the Republican-lead. I am proud of the work our committee members have done to point out the flaws and shortcomings of the proposals that are being proposed by the Democrat majority.

As a team, these three pillars guide our work on this committee, 1) making our communities safer for our constituents, 2) holding criminals accountable for their actions, and 3) enacting policies that help peace officer recruitment and retention.

On Wednesday, we held a news conference to highlight a few of the bills our members have proposed that support law enforcement, enhance public safety, and hold criminals accountable.

You can watch the news conference by clicking here.

In addition to working on policies that keep our communities and neighborhoods safe, we also need to let law enforcement know that we will continue to fight for them so that they can expect to receive due process and not have to fear a politically motivated prosecution whether they are serving in the most remote areas of the state or the most populated county.

The prosecutorial misconduct we have seen at the hands of Hennepin County Attorney, Mary Moriarty, in her handling of the Trooper Londgregan case is disqualifying.

It’s been a very difficult time for law enforcement officers and their families. They deserve our support, and I am committed to making sure that happens here in St. Paul.
