Rep. Paul Novotny Reflects on First Year as Public Safety Chair: “Plenty of Work Ahead, and I’m Ready for It”

ST. PAUL, MN – As the 2025 legislative session ends, Representative Paul Novotny (R–Elk River)—a third term legislator and retired Sherburne County Sheriff’s Sergeant—shared reflections on his first year serving as Chair of the Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee, as well as thoughts on the upcoming special session.

“Serving as Chair of the Public Safety Committee this year has been a huge responsibility given the spending of the last session by the DFL trifecta that is projected to cause a 6 billion dollar deficit in the next biennium if current spending levels were continued.

The session got off to a rocky start. For 23 days, Democrats stayed away from their duties—still collecting paychecks funded by your hard-earned tax dollars—while refusing to show up and do the people’s work. Nearly a month of wasted time, and now we’re playing catch-up. Minnesotans deserve better. I didn’t run for office to sit on the sidelines or stall the process—I came to work. And work is exactly what we’re going to do in this special session.

We’ve got one more shot to pass a strong, responsible state budget—one that respects taxpayers, reins in wasteful spending, and delivers real results for Minnesota families, communities, and local businesses. I’ll keep showing up, speaking up, and fighting for the Minnesotans who expect accountability and leadership. That’s my job, and I’m proud to do it.”

More information about the special session will be released in the coming days.
