RELEASE: Rep. Igo Sounds Alarm on DFL Provision to End Mining/Pipeline Infrastructure Projects

Tuesday, May 11, 2021

ST. PAUL —State Representative Spencer Igo, R-Grand Rapids, is sounding the alarm about a Democrat provision tucked into the Omnibus Commerce/Energy that would effectively end pipeline, mining, and other heavy infrastructure projects as we know it in Minnesota.

“Though they don’t want to admit it, Democrats are knowingly pushing an energy plan that would make it almost impossible for pipelines, mines, and other projects to get permitted in the future,” said Rep. Igo. “I’m afraid that the language in this provision will allow current and future administrations to act unilaterally to stop critical infrastructure projects from moving forward under the guise of adhering to green emission standards. These sorts of mandates and energy goals would crush the Northland’s economy as we look to mine the critical minerals needed to build the world of tomorrow.”

Under the bill, the statewide greenhouse gas emission reduction targets would now be incorporated into all aspects of state agency activities, including awarding grants as well as regulating and permitting infrastructure projects.
