Capitol Newsletter from Rep. Spencer Igo

Friday, June 18, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

The legislature returned to St. Paul on Monday to begin what’s likely a weeks long special session to finish work on a new state budget. In addition to work on the budget, Governor Walz extended his emergency powers for another 30 days.

In the House, we voted for the 19th time to end the peacetime emergency. Unfortunately, this vote failed once again on a largely party-line vote of 64-68. It is incredibly disappointing that my DFL colleagues won’t join us in accepting the reality that the COVID-19 emergency is long-over, and that the legislature MUST be restored to its rightful place as a coequal branch of government.

Debate on budget bills began on Thursday and lasted for several hours as we made it a point to make sure that bills receive the proper vetting they deserve.

During Thursday’s debate, I spoke about the importance of mining the critical minerals needed to build the world of tomorrow right here in the Northland. You can watch my speech on this topic by clicking here or the photo below.

In addition to ending the emergency powers once and for all, other priorities for special session include stopping Democrat policies that will cause health care costs to skyrocket, and addressing the quickly rising crime rates in the Metro area.

I will do my best to keep you updated on what’s happening in St. Paul. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have. I can be I can be reached by phone at 651-296-4936 or via email at

Have a great day,
